Women Arise: For The Bible Tells Me So
I often run into women that I haven’t seen in a while, and one of the questions they inevitably ask is if I am still teaching Bible study. You see, I taught Bible study for over four decades – that’s lots of women and of all ages.
What makes me feel most sad is that often, after some conversation, it is obvious that they have left their study of the Word by the wayside. For too many, no Bible study group—equals no accountability, no commitment to learn, no spiritual growth. Obviously we are not all called to be teachers, but we are ALL called to be students of the Word. “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that need not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2Timothy 2:15).
The relationship between God and man comes alive and grows from the study of His Word. It is through the Bible that we understand, not only who He is, but who we are in Him. Communication is essential to any intimacy in a relationship.
Teaching gave me the opportunity to dig deeper into the Word, which in turn framed my world view into a biblical context. It caused me to understand the access I had to lean on His strength and to grow in biblical depth, which allowed me to teach — even during traumatic happenings in my life. It was through His Word that I could trace His fingerprints on my sorrows, find His treasures in darkness, and hear His still small voice. His Word ministered to my own heart, but even more than that became an example to those watching during that time. This was only possible through the living active word of Christ already planted in my heart. “The word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow, it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).
As followers of Jesus, we should be studying His “guidebook.” It is what allows us to learn of His steadfast character and His sovereignty over all things. Without biblical centered core values, it would be difficult to have the proper lens to decipher when the mountains of life obstruct our view.
As a woman, some of my favorite teachings were on the work Jesus did in the lives of women. ALL WOMEN! Jesus raised the status of harlots and heroines. He was the first to initiate equality for women by including them in his friend group, taking time to minister to them, and appearing to them first after His resurrection.
Also contained in the pages of the Bible is a clear outline of the attributes of a godly woman in a day and age when the gender lines can be so blurred. Proverbs 31 is a composite picture of these characteristics; she is valiant, brave, courageous, and diligent. She is a warrior. This does not include an “in your face” attitude, but rather strength sheathed in mercy and love. She pushes through her life with theology at the core. Obedience to His commands are non-negotiable. That is why we need to know His word, so we have that biblical world view as our auto response. When we know Bible, we are shaped by it. We don’t fix our attention on the obstacles but on God who shapes our faith.
Revelation 3:20 says “Behold I stand at the door and knock. And if any man hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and sup with him and he with me.”
Time is a valued commodity, and our organization “Soldiers for Faith” has uniquely designed a “come and see” model to Bible study that conquers all excuses of time constraints. We offer call in phone Bible studies at times that are personally tailored to meet your schedule whether you are single, married, young or old, juggling a busy work schedule or a stay- at- home mother.
My husband’s life was full to the brim with family and work demands. He never had the opportunity to regularly attend Bible study with a group of men only. Not anymore! My husband joined one of the men’s Bible studies offered by Soldiers for Faith and he meets with them every Saturday morning without fail. This has become such an integral part of his lifestyle that even if we are on the road, vacation, or doing yard work, he makes sure he has his ear buds in and hooks up to this invaluable hour with other men strengthening his faith. “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). This study has been an impetus to move him to a deeper devotion of the study of God’s Word — and as his wife it is observable.
