Music to Soothe the Soul
I never fully understood the power of music until my world was imploded by several tragedies. The sadness in my heart was so overwhelming that I couldn’t pray. I simply had no words to utter because I felt totally paralyzed with fear. I knew I needed to communicate with the Lord, but my mind was ruminating with hopeless terror. And so I did what was doable-- I put on my worship music. I needed another outlet to speak the words of my heart to my heavenly Father’s ears.
I closed my eyes and allowed the music to rest my mind and minister to my soul. It was like each verse unraveled pain, soothed hurts, and implanted hope to my heart. If you are hemorrhaging with a great sorrow, please don’t allow your emotions to overcome you with fearful thoughts. Get out your favorite worship songs and allow the Holy Spirit to use the words as prayers from you to the heavens—in spite of the pain.
Let the tears fall. Let the words permeate your heart and infuse you with God’s presence. I have listed five songs that held me up through my crisis. If you don’t have any favorites, I hope these help you. There will be particular verses that you will hold onto as if your own life depended on it—and it might. So allow your heart to sing even while your lips may not be able to. Place your cries at His feet. Never forget that Satan cannot stand before praises to God. He will flee and he will take with him all of the accusations that are burying you at that moment like, “Your life is over,” or “You will never get through this.”
I am here to say that you will get through it. So get a cup of tea, close your eyes and google some of these songs. I am sure there is just the perfect one here for your today.
Song #1: Words I Would Say by Sidewalk Prophet
Favorite verse: “Be strong in the Lord and never give up hope you’re gonna do great things, I already know…God has a plan for you…..”
Song#2: I Need You Now by Plumb
“Standing on a road I didn’t plan, wondering how I got to where I am; I’m trying to hear that still small voice; I’m trying to hear above the noise. How many times have you heard me cry out ‘God please take this?’ How many times have you given me strength to just keep breathing? Oh I need you, God I need you now.”
Song #3:Let the Waters Rise by Mikeschair
“Don’t know where to begin, it’s like my world’s caving in. And I try to control my fear, where do I go from here? Sometimes it’s so hard to pray when You feel so far away ; But I am willing to go where You want me to and God I trust you.”
Song #4: I Choose to Believe by Phillips, Craig and Dean
“It didn’t take long for my whole world to change. One phone call now life will never be the same. It’s like I’m watching my whole world go dark. Nothing makes much sense. But still with all my heart…I Choose to Believe.”
Song #5: The Hurt and the Healer by Mercy Me
"Why? The question that is never far away. The healing doesn’t come from the explained. Jesus please don’t let this go in vain. You’re all I have, All that remains…”
Please never forget that He knows and He cares. May your worship music be that very vehicle that will help you find rest through this difficult time.
